Tracking Spirit in the Birth Environment
with
Isa Gucciardi, PhD, Author
Isa Gucciardi, Ph.D., author of The New Return to the Great Mother, designed this class to help mothers, partners, and birth professionals stay connected with the unseen yet powerful resources that are contained within the birthing experience. Students learn to connect with deep inner resources and to embrace the profound transformative power present at birth.
Birth is a biological initiation that allows you to see
spiritual and physical realms at once.
As a student, this class will:
- Help you and/or others prepare for birth more intentionally.
- Help you understand how to properly direct the power that arises in the birthing environment.
- Explore birth as a rite of passage and understand the possibilities that open when birth is seen or experienced in this way.
You will find this workshop especially beneficial if you:
- Are an expectant mother or partner seeking to have an empowering birth experience.
- Have a sense that birthing and artistic expression is a deeply spiritual experience and want to explore this further.
- Are a birth professional seeking ways to better manage energy in the birth environment and protect yourself and your patients from burn out.
“Tracking Spirit in the Birth Environment was a chance for me to spend the whole day, in community, engaged in examining the question: What is initiation? I discovered initiations are openings to shed one’s old skin, and emerge anew. I discovered how much more there is to know about the process of birthing, both self and other.”

Mothering & Matriarchy by Isa Gucciardi
Matriarchal societies are organized by maternal priorities, meaning all members are cared for in a nurturing and supportive way. To create communities rooted in these values, both men and women must change their fundamental relationship to mothering and motherhood. This shift must go beyond the rhetoric of early feminists who decried the second-class position mothering placed on women, and who sought to liberate women from the prison of the culturally-defined institution of motherhood. Instead, we must recognize the power of motherhood independent of any cultural value systems where mothering becomes a pawn of dominance and ownership. To do this, we must understand how our inability to nurture ourselves and others has weakened us, both on a societal and an individual level.
Who is Tara? by Isa Gucciardi
In Buddhist cultures, there are many forms of the feminine, but the most well-known is Tara, the mother of all Buddhas. Tara is a deity of love, compassion, and longevity. In the Buddhist tradition, it is understood that the awakened state emerges from the generative power of the feminine. Like the goddesses of other cultures, Tara represents the feminine aspect of spirituality, or the “sacred feminine.” There are twenty-one different Taras, and each form reveals a unique aspect of feminine power. Tara’s many colors and forms represent her characteristics, and articulate the multi-faceted nature of the sacred feminine. In ancient cultures, there was a deep reverence for the sacred feminine. Many societal structures centered on the respect and cultivation of her qualities. In the modern time, these essential feminine qualities have been largely forgotten, and as a consequence, our world is out of balance. By reclaiming and advocating for these qualities, we can regain balance in our current world, both individually and collectively.
Using Integrated Energy Medicine Techniques to Address P.M.S. by Isa Gucciardi
To the extent that physical imbalance originates in the spirit, there are pathways, through the spirit, for insight and healing. A case is discussed. Most non-Western medical traditions recognize that physical imbalance, particularly in chronic conditions, is just the tip of the iceberg. They recognize that physical illness is the last and most serious condition in a long line of manifestations by a particular imbalance. Non-Western and shamanic healing traditions, including Chinese medicine, all suggest that physical illness originates in the spirit. My work confirms this position as well. In my practice, I have seen again and again that imbalance on a spirit level moves to a mental level if it is not resolved while on the spiritual level. If the imbalance is not resolved on the mental level, it moves to the emotional level. If the imbalance is not dealt with on the emotional level, it moves to the physical level. Once it reaches the physical level, if it is still not resolved, the imbalance can cause serious discomfort, dysfunction, and even death.

The Creative Portal: Pre-recorded Videos
Dr. Isa Gucciardi has included two pre-recorded videos to watch before attending the second live session class. The first video recording discusses the creative portal as an energetic configuration in the environment of birth. This portal involves a process of birthing and manifestation of creative potential. The second video discusses the characteristics and process of initiation. Biological initiations are initiation moments that bring about change from one state of being to another. Birth, puberty, the first sexual encounter with other, giving birth, menopause, and death are all initiation moments. Dr. Isa shares how ritual plays a role during the intitation process and can help open the creative portals.
In today’s world the creative portal around birth has become compromised. Dr. Isa shares how the medicalization of birth has jeopardized the potential of creative forces and what we can do to restore initiation and ritual processes.

Maintaining Creative Portals as Parent or Practitioner
Dr. Isa has included two follow-up videos to the second live training to help birthing parents, families, and professionals understand the requirements of maintaining a creative birthing portal in different birthing environments. Maintaining and safe-guarding the creative processes of birth require a relationship with the Great Mother. Understanding these requirements help mitigate obstacles arising from within the mother, the child, the outside, or even within yourself.
