Birth Mask Reveal Training Level 1
Karlton Terry joins APPPAH in April to teach this foundation course of the Birth Mask Reveal (BMR) training.
Birth Masks are the story of our cranial and facial molding caused by compression and drag forces during birth. Evaluating the Birth Mask enables us to appreciate clues to the physical and psycho-emotional story of the client’s birth. A diverse range of practitioners can benefit from this information to support their clients in an efficient and compassionate manner. When the traces of trauma are acknowledged, most human beings are instantly moved to compassion, and a deeper field of “holding” opens.
By recognizing the unheard stories every baby has–including the baby in our adult clients and even ourselves–we see a clear path to issues where a soul needs the most support.
This Level I course–the first of three courses–is comprised of four classes in which we learn BASIC MAPPING of each region of a client’s face. The second and third Levels of the Training are for practitioners who want to learn more about perinatal therapeutic techniques and protocols. Level II, called Implicit Memory Illumination-IMI, teaches how implicit memories arise in our clients when we bring our attention to their cicatrices*. In Level III, Pre and Perinatal Protocols-PPP, Karlton will demonstrate many standard P&P healing techniques as well as more advanced protocols he has developed with volunteer participants who will be doing their own healing work in demos.
This training course is suitable for anyone working in the P&P field. BMR’s support practitioners to identify the prominent presenters, the “bull’s eye”, so they can be confident that they are working efficiently and accurately. Having a BMR on each client means you are holding insight into that client with intelligence, accurate empathy, and compassion that would otherwise take much longer to develop.
*A Cicatrix is a somatic or physiological trace that is retained subsequent to physical traumas
TRAINING OVERVIEW
The BMR method discloses details of birth imprints chronicled in the tissues of the face (of a baby or an adult) so that practitioners and parents can see what happened.
You will learn what perinatal events occurred so as to create features specific to an individual person. We all wear the mask of our own Hero’s Journey, these facial imprints tell their own story — what was encountered, what was overcome– of how we gained entry into this world. It is all written in the tissues of the face.
BMRs are done with a single photograph of the baby, child or adult. The baby is not present. Sessions typically will include guided meditative explorations, generous use of exhibits, anatomical drawings, illustrations, statistics, PowerPoint presentations and time for questions and discussion.

Class 1: Morphology of the Eye Region Wednesday April 12, 2023
- Because there are so many small and vulnerable bones around the eyes, all vaginally born babies, most emergency C-section babies, and even most planned C-section babies have imprints from birth that are held in the Eye Region. These imprints appear as asymmetries.
In this first class, you will learn about the compression and drag forces that create asymmetry and cause differing eye sizes, “eye splits,” a recessed eye, and asymmetrical (non-binocular) vision. You will also learn about maladies affecting the eye muscles, the nervous system, and emotional/psychological systems which hold the birth imprints in place as implicit memory, even through adulthood.Eye imprints influence the optic nerve which conveys integral information to the brain and affects the way we see the world. Torsions and even lesions are created in the many layers of connective tissues and muscles due to the perinatal head rotating under pressure through the narrowest part of the birth canal.

From the top of the forehead to the bottom of the chin, no one is completely symmetrical, not even planned C section babies. The lines of asymmetry have a story to tell about where pressures made imprints, where rotational events or attempts failed, and where struggles succeeded.
In the second class, you find out how the variation of direction of the cranium passing through the birth canal causes asymmetrical imprints because of the compressive forces pushing in different directions at various points during different moments of descent. This is why almost everyone’s nose is slightly crooked.
Class 3: How Birth Impacts the Large Cranial Bones Wednesday April 26, 2023
Because a perinate’s cranial bones are thin and not fully ossified, even the four large cranial bones (the Frontal, Parietal, and Occipital), are subject to twisting, buckling, and warping from the forces of the uterine contractions pressing the head through the birth canal.
Unit 3 of this training will cover: how compression and drag forces impact the four large cranial bones parietal and frontal bone ‘overrides’ and ‘underrides’superciliary archway depressions the overall morphology of the cranium, and the brain the meninges, the falx, and the tentorium and how these important membranes and proximal tissues are affected by birth.
Class 4: LIVE SESSION – DEBRIEF Q & A – WRAP UP Wednesday May 3, 2023

This class has a different format, having three individual parts with time segments as follows:
Part 1 — 45 min.s — 10 min. break;
Part 2 — 55 min.s — 20 min. break;
Part 3 — 65 min.s
Part 1 A volunteer or chosen participant, after having a preparation supervision with Karlton, will execute a live BMR on a client, explaining the diagramming, and exploring the prominent presenter with the class.
Part 2 Actual BMR live demo. A volunteer or chosen participant will bring a baby client with its mother (and father if possible), and together with KT will execute a live BMR session while the participants observe, keep track of questions, and take notes.
Part 3a The BMR will be discussed and evaluated step by step.
Teaching points will highlight the structure, feel, and flow of how to do a BMR. There will be a particular emphasis on:
- how KT develops rapport with the mother
- how the prominent presenter was uncovered
- how information was shared with the mother
- how KT tracked the tolerance threshold of the mother
- how the homework assignments were developed to honor both the needs of the baby, and the tolerance threshold/self-regulation of the mother.
Part3b Closure. KT will address a few final questions and discuss the nature of Level 2 of the BMR training: Implicit Memory Illumination.
